Catholic Union Head of Public Affairs, James Somerville-Meikle, writes:
This week has seen Parliament at its best – a fitting tribute to Sir David Amess.
On Monday, MPs paid tribute to the man who had served in the House of Commons for almost 40 years. Both the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition reflected on Sir David’s lifelong Catholic faith and how this motivated his public service.
One of the most moving speeches was from Catholic Union Vice-President, Mike Kane MP, who spoke about the importance of faith to people’s lives.
Tributes were also paid to James Brokenshire in the Commons on Wednesday following his death from cancer last month.
On Friday, peers got the opportunity to debate Baroness Meacher’s Assisted Dying Bill. There were some fantastic speeches, including from Catholic Union Vice-Presidents, Baroness Hollins and Baroness Hopper.
There was no division on the Bill – as is custom for Private Members’ Bills – so it will now progress to Committee Stage, although the Government has given a clear steer that it will not be supporting the legislation.
Thank you to all Catholic Union members and supporters who helped oppose the Bill.
Sir David was no-doubt looking on.
