The Catholic Union is deeply saddened by the death of John Barrie KCSG FCA. John was well-known and well-liked by over a generation of Catholic Union members.
John served on the Council for many years and in several capacities. He also served on the Union’s Parliamentary and Public Affairs Committee, Membership Committee, and Education Committee.
He helped to professionalise the work of the Catholic Union and began the “News from Parliament” which later became the Weekly Briefing.
John was also instrumental in setting up the Catholic Union Charitable Trust, which supports the charitable activities of the Union.
Following his retirement from the Council, John was made a Vice President of the Catholic Union in 2018 and continued to play an active part in the Union’s work.
In addition to his work for the Catholic Union, John was Grand President of the Catenians, and he served as Treasurer and Chairman of the Society of St Augustine of Canterbury, as well as supporting numerous other Catholic causes and organisations, including the Cardinal Hume Centre.
He was appointed a Knight of St Gregory in 1983, and subsequently promoted to Knight Commander.

Catholic Union Director, Nigel Parker, comments: “For many years, John was a familiar face at Catholic Union events and talks. Indeed, for many of us he seemed to be the Catholic Union. While he supported the Catholic Union in retirement, he brought an energy and enthusiasm to the role that few could have matched.
“John will be greatly missed, but we give thanks for his life and service to the Catholic Union over many years. He cared deeply about the mission of the Union and always showed a great interest and care for our members. The fruit of his labours can be seen in the work of the Union today and in the years ahead. We will keep John, Una, and his family in our prayers.”
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
The Mass preceding the Catholic Union’s AGM on Tuesday 28 November will be offered for John and all members who have died during the last year.
Donations to the Catholic Union Charitable Trust in John’s memory would be welcomed. Donations can be made online here.
