Head of Public Affairs, James Somerville-Meikle, writes:
It’s been a challenging week for those seeking to uphold the dignity of life.
On Wednesday, the High Court rejected the legal case brought against the UK Government by Heidi Crowter and others who claimed that current abortion law is discriminatory by allowing abortion up to birth for Down’s Syndrome.
Earlier this week we heard the horrific account of the woman who was forced to give birth in HMP Bronzefield in Surrey; the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman report found a series of failings in the woman’s treatment.
While in Scotland, a consultation has opened this week on a Bill to introduce assisted dying.
The challenges to life are numerous and they are serious. The Catholic Union will continue to do everything we can to make the case for the dignity of life, working with Catholic Bishops and pro-life groups.
Perhaps more than anything, we need a culture that values life in all its forms – please keep that in your prayers this week.
