Newman House

The Catholic Union of Great Britain was represented at the Volunteering Fair at Newman House Catholic Chaplaincy for London’s Universities on Sunday 12 October.

The morning began with celebration of Holy Mass for the Solemnity of St John Henry Newman by Fr Philip Miller, Senior Chaplain as it’s the patronal feast for the Chaplaincy. Fr Philip’s homily touched on the life of St John Henry Newman, the sacrifices he endured by remaining faithful to God’s call and mission as well as how he became a Catholic when he was visited by Blessed Dominic Barberi CP exactly half way through his life. Fr Philip then broke open the Word of God taken from the exquisite readings from the Book of Wisdom, the Second Letter of St Paul to St Timothy and the reading from the Gospel of St John to the student congregation of a packed Chapel.

Providentially 12 October is also the Feast of St Carlo Acutis, the first since the canonisation of this popular saint last month.

Several different Catholic organisations and charities were represented.

Many students came to the CUGB stall. It was an invaluable opportunity to engage young adults with the work and mission of the CUGB. We had some fascinating conversations and in general most of the young adults we met were not aware of the CUGB. On finding out about its work, there was palpable interest with some signing up for Weekly Briefings and a few joining as members. Membership is free for under 25s. Many took away flyers and leaflets to find out more as well as to research the website.

With thanks to Sr Dr Carolyn Morrison RA (Social Outreach Chaplain for London’s Universities) for her gracious invitation and Fr Philip Miller.
