Andrew Hollingsworth, Chairman, Society of Friends of Westminster Cathedral writes:
Candles at Westminster Cathedral are far more than sources of light—they are sacred symbols woven into the very heart of our worship. In the Catholic tradition, light carries profound spiritual meaning. Christ, the “light of the world,” stands at the centre of the Gospel message, and every candle lit in our Cathedral continues this rich and holy tradition. Whether offered in prayer or thanksgiving, each flame speaks of a soul’s yearning for grace and connection with the divine.
In every Catholic church, the quiet presence of votive candles tells a powerful story. Crafted from beeswax—symbolising purity, sacrifice, and humble service—these candles honour both Christ and Our Lady, while also reflecting the tireless dedication of the faithful. Their light is a daily testimony to prayer and devotion.
What many do not see, however, is the immense volume of candles needed to sustain this sacred practice. Votive candles are replaced daily. Altar candles must be renewed regularly. Until now, these candles have been stored beneath the Cathedral—in crypt spaces never designed for this purpose, creating potential fire risks.
To protect the Cathedral and ensure the safe and efficient management of our candle supplies, we are planning to construct a dedicated external candle store beside the toilet block. This facility will eliminate safety hazards and improve how we care for the materials essential to our worship.
