As you have probably heard, the Assisted Suicide bill is back after Lauren Edwards MP (Lab) Rochester and Strood decided to use her second place in the Private Members’ Bill ballot to re-introduce Kim Leadbeater’s bill from the last Parliamentary Session.
A debate and vote in the Commons could be as early as 11 September. During the in-depth and essential scrutiny of the Bill in the previous Parliamentary Session there were warnings from a number of bodies, including Royal Colleges, the Equality and Human Rights Commission, the Former Chief Executive of NHS England and most critically, people with disabilities.
You may want to consider asking to meet with your MP in person, or writing to them, about any aspect of the proposed legislation that you think is not safe. You can listen to any of the debates that have taken place so far by searching proceedings in Hansard and identifying issues that concern you.
Archbishop John Sherrington, Lead Bishop for Life Issues, is calling on people of goodwill to join in work and prayer to prevent this flawed bill from succeeding.
